Auriga, the charioteer:
One of the earliest constellations to be recognized. Auriga may represent the lame Greek god Hephaestus or his son, each one is credited with inventing the chariot. The constellation is also associated with shepherds.
NU AUR (Nu Aurigae). Lost to time, the ancients made up the classical constellations. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, astronomers then filled in the blanks. But why stop there?

Auriga contains the sixth-brightest star in the sky, Capella, a Roman name meaning ‘she-goat' (its Greek name was Aix). Ptolemy described this star as being on the charioteer's left shoulder.
Epsilon Aurigae is currently being eclipsed by a companion object with a dusty disc, as illustrated in this artist's concept. The dark phase will persist for the next 18 months.
