Bandwidth: The difference between the highest and lowest frequencies to which a receiver is sensitive.

 


Bandwidth
(a) The width of the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (the range of frequencies) that is permitted to pass through an electronic device (measured in cycles per second).

Bandwidth depends on the overall effectiveness of the antenna, so all of these parameters must be understood to fully characterize the bandwidth capabilities of an antenna.

These filter bands are centered at (with full-width half-power bandwidth) in micrometers: 6.62 (1.01), 7.88 (1.09), 8.56 (1.18), 9.30 (1.18), 10.11 (1.10), 11.03 (1.19), 11.78 (1.07), 12.58 (0.81), 14.96 (0.86).

The instrument bandwidth of 3-10 keV was defined by the detector window absorption (the window was 0.01 inch beryllium) and the upper level discriminator. The active gas volume (P-10 mixture) was 2.54 cm deep, providing good efficiency up to 10 keV.

Radio telescopes are used to measure broad-bandwidth continuum radiation as well as spectroscopic features due to atomic and molecular lines found in the radio spectrum of astronomical objects.

Most use single sideband voice (SSB), which uses less bandwidth than AM. SSB sounds like ducks quacking on an AM radio.

A message size could be described in bits, while the capacity of the communications channel, informally known as its "bandwidth", could be described in terms of bits transferred per second.

At optical wavelengths the commonest set of broadband filters is the Johnson-Cousins (ultraviolet, blue, visual, red, infrared) system with bandwidths of ~1000 A.

The Big Bear Solar Observatory in California is in the process of installing an AO system for better resolution at very narrow bandwidths.

Data rate. MTO not only would have been able to send data to Earth via high-speed X-band and Ka-band radio signals, but also via laser light beams. That was expected to bring a tenfold increase in bandwidth Š the rate of data transmission.

Unfortunately the primary sensory input device for us humans (our eyes) is very limited in "bandwidth" (the span of electromagnetic frequencies, or 'colours', to which it is sensitive) and while the images move us, ...

It is also suggested that, when using infrared or ultraviolet filters, the spectral range or the "bandwidth half-maximum" (BWHM) be provided. This information is usually readily available from the filters manufacturer.
