Barycentre

Astronomy BarycenterBarycentric Dynamical Time

Barycentre. The centre of gravity of the Earth-Moon system. The Earth is 81 times the mass of the Moon and the barycentre of the Earth-Moon system actually lies inside the Earth.

The common centre of mass of the system (the barycentre) is located about 1,700 km-a quarter the Earth's radius-beneath the surface of the Earth. The Moon makes a complete orbit around the Earth every 27.

The most common definition rests upon whether the barycentre is below the surface of the larger body, though this is unofficial and somewhat arbitrary.
