Altitude bearings
Wooden pattern was made in May for altitude bearings. Single pattern could be used for both sides because diameter piece can be flipped around:
Then we started to try to cast them at Doug's "foundry": ...

bearing: a compass direction, measured (usually in degrees) clockwise from the North (e.g. E is 90º and W is 270º). See Equations 15 to calculate the bearing between two locations.

Bearing (mechanical)
A bearing is a device to allow constrained relative motion between two parts, typically rotation or linear movement.

A bearing ball (BB) is launched from the ramp at middle-right, and as it rolls upward and towards the left on the inclined glass, it encounters a revolving magnetic "Jupiter," which can boost the BB higher up the glass surface.

The ore bearing rock formations in Egypt are found in distant, inhospitable Wadis in the eastern desert and the Sinai and required large state controlled expeditions to obtain the gold, copper ores, and decorative stones found there.

Both side bearings must be round (especially the one with the encoder), the centre must be carefully located, and the encoder shaft parallel to the elevation axis. Any runout There will cause serious inaccuracies when moving across the sky.

Instrument-bearing satellites, which drew close to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus in the 1970s and '80s to gather chemical and physical data from these bodies, discovered rings about Jupiter and new moons of that planet, Saturn, ...

(a) Directional bearing around the horizon, measured in degrees from north (0°).
(b) Angular distance from the north point eastward to the intersection of the celestial horizon with the vertical circle passing through the object and the zenith.

FRACTION OF LIFE-BEARING PLANETS ON WHICH INTELLIGENCE ARISES
As with the evolution of life, the appearance of a well-developed brain is a very unlikely event if only random chance is involved.

"Images of the clay-bearing surfaces from the MRO High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) reveal layering and a range of polygonal textures similar to those observed in phyllosilicate-bearing rocks elsewhere on Mars .

In modern practice the term is used principally to refer to a telescope mounted over a compass or compass repeater to facilitate observation of bearings, and to a surveying instrument consisting of a telescope mounted over a compass rose, ...

NASA's proposed Terrestrial Planet Finder, a space-based mission, should be able to obtain infrared or optical pictures of life-bearing planets.

Because the navigation gave them a range and bearing to the LM, the first order of business in finding a specific spot on the map was to figure out just where they had landed.

Once in a while, a truly massive plume of hot rock from the Earth's mantle can erupt through the crust for centuries or even millenia, producing acid rains, destruction of the ozone layer from emissions of chlorine-bearing compounds, ...

This is designed specifically to study iron-bearing minerals. The sensor head for the MB is mounted on the end of the rover arm, or instrument deployment device. The arm can place the sensor head directly on a sample to be studied.

The grateful Byzantines erected a statue to "torch-bearing" Hecate, and adopted the lunar crescent as the badge of the city.

I mainly worked on different aspects of foil gas bearings, which use a thin layer of gas as opposed to oil as a lubricant. You might find these bearings on things such as a turbocharger in a car or an air cycle machine in an airplane.

Getting Your Bearings (Check the study guide for this lesson)
You'll learn how to find the "North Star" and use it to figure out which way is north, your latitude and how much time has passed.

Rolling friction occurs when a wheel, ball, or cylinder rolls freely over a surface, as in ball and roller bearings. The main source of friction in rolling appears to be dissipation of energy involved in deformation of the objects.

Stressing that there is very little experimental evidence bearing on this assertion, Dicke and his student Carl Brans proposed in 1961 a modification of general relativity akin to a theory considered earlier by Pascual Jordan.

In using what-if questions in the classroom, it is worth bearing in mind that students extrapolating the effects of new scenarios will encounter two different situations: direct changes to the new version of Earth and indirect changes resulting from ...

January 31, 2004: Spirit's Mössbauer spectrometer reveals the kinds of iron-bearing minerals in a rock. Analysis of readings by that spectrometer as well as photos from the rover's microscopic camera show the rock Adirondack is volcanic material.

By using the formula Couteau provides, all variables (ball bearing radius, distance between the lamps, distance from lamps to ball bearing, and distance from telescope objective to ball bearing) are used to define the separation of the artificial ...

Unfortunately her mother was overbearing that she thought herself to be more beautiful than than the daughters of Nereus, a god of the sea. So Cassiopeia was hit by the anger and the revenge of the god Poseidon.

The iconography also contains two torch bearing boys (Cautes and Cautopates) on each side of the zodiac.

As an example of the difficulties of not always bearing in mind just where the Pole Star is, let's take Capella as an example.
Let us say, for instance, that it's a late November evening and Taurus has been visible for an hour or so far to the east.

The average brightness of Mercurian surfaces suggests a composition deficient in titanium- and iron-bearing minerals such as are found in the lunar maria (low-lying dark areas) and perhaps more like the calcium-bearing minerals of the lunar ...

An edge on picture of a galaxy bearing open clusters taken over the course of billions of years would produce an image of a spherical cloud around the center of the galaxy.

Your position on Earth also has some, but significantly less, bearing on latitudinal libration. If you reside at far northern latitudes, you see further north on the Moon than someone in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is an altitude-azimuth (Altazimuth) mount; the bottom axis is vertical (the azimuth bearing), allowing the base to rotate horizontally, and the other bearing, atop the base, is horizontal (the altitude), ...

The galaxies themselves do not expand because their local space is held together by the mass (and hence the gravitational force) of the galaxy itself. As an analogy imagine an expanding rubber sheet with ball bearings on it.

Mars remains at the top of the list of possible life-bearing planets. The Viking probes found little evidence of life on Mars. But they sampled only two isolated locations. Is there life elsewhere or was there life at some time in the past on Mars?

This is deeply tied to observations bearing on the formation, evolution, and distribution of galaxies.

Carl Sagan helped design the plaques carried by both Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11. These plaques, bearing the images of a man and a woman as well as a diagram showing Earth's location in the Galaxy, ...

Prometheus carried the fire triumphantly in a vegetable stalk like a runner bearing the Olympic torch. Zeus cruelly punished him for this theft by chaining him to Mount Caucasus, where a long-winged eagle ate his liver during the day.

a bimetallic strip, to compensate the balance spring for the effects of changes in temperature
a caged roller bearing, the ultimate version of his anti-friction devices.
Both of these inventions are used in a variety of machines nowadays.

The temperature of a planet is determined mostly by its distance from its star, so there is a narrow range of distances, called the "habitable zone," where astronomers expect to find such liquid-water-bearing planets.

The simpliest telescope mounting is an altazimuth mount. It is similar to that of a surveying transit. A fork rotates in azimuth, and bearings on the tips of the fork allow the telescope to vary in altitude.

The principal feature of WinOrbit is a series of Map Windows, which display the current position of satellites and observers on a simple world map, together with information such as bearing (azimuth), distance, ...

mountainous terrain but by the disposition of other large landscape features " large bodies of water, expanses of bare ground or sand, conurban development, large areas of snow " as these shape the thermal and moisture content of the weather bearing ...

The C (or carbonaceous) chondrites contain water-bearing minerals and carbon compounds including a variety of organic molecules such as amino acids. Carbonaceous chondrites are the most primitive meteorites--primitive in a chemical way.

Percival Lowell, a famous American astronomer of the late 1800s, tried in vain to find this planet. However, the planet was later discovered by someone working in an observatory bearing Lowell's name.

If changing conditions within the universe make the luminosity of a type 1a supernova change with redshift, then the distance that is derived will be systematically too large or too small. This has a direct bearing on the application of this ...

these are too faint or the sky is not transparent enough on a particular night, or maybe your data is incorrect (wrong magnitude, wrong apparent size, wrong coordinates or mis-plotted in the sky charts), or possibly you just lost your bearings and ...

The only problem was that light propagated through free space where nothing of substance could be detected. Physicists therefore suggested the existence of an "luminiferous (light-bearing) ether" as the propagation medium.
