Bellatrix, is the third brightest star in the constellation Orion and the twenty-seventh brightest star in the nighttime sky. The name Bellatrix is Latin for Amazon.

Janeway refers to Bellatrix as the original Arabic name for this star, however, the name "Bellatrix" is actually Latin in origin and means "Amazon". It is also known as the Amazon Star and the "warrioress".

The left shoulder of Orion is marked by Gamma Orionis, known as Bellatrix, a Latin name meaning ‘the female warrior'. The star at the hunter's right knee, Kappa Orionis, is called Saiph.

For example, take the three brightest stars in Orion (Rigel, Betelgeuse and Bellatrix): they are 250, 150 and 210 parsecs away respectively (1 parsec = 1pc = 3.26 Light Years).

The bright stars Betelgeuse and Bellatrix mark Orion's shoulders, while Saiph and Rigel mark his feet. The three bright stars between his shoulders and feet are his belt, and three fainter stars below the belt are his sword.

The other corners of the constellation are formed by Bellatrix (gamma Orionis) and Saiph (kappa Orionis). It was once thought that all women born under the sign of Bellatrix would be fortunate and have the gift of speech.
