Beta Scorpii is called Graffias, Latin for ‘claws'. This star is sometimes also known as Acrab, from the Arabic for ‘scorpion'.
Although it has the Bayer designation "beta", it is the 7th brightest and not the second brightest star in Sco. Because it is close to the ecliptic, Beta Scorpii can be occulted by the Moon and, very rarely, by planets.
