A black star is a stellar object which has high gravitational attraction. Black stars can remain undetected until encountered by entering their gravity field.

I highly recommend the "desk edition" of Sky Atlas 2000, which shows black stars on white paper. The "field edition" shows white stars on black paper and is actually much more difficult so use in the dark with a red flashlight.
The star charts show the entire sky with a white sky background and black stars and include a calendar of astronomical events for the month.

Prior to that time, the term black star was used occasionally. The latter term appears in an early episode of Star Trek, and was still used occasionally after 1967.
