Blue Moon, What is it?
Abstract
By popular acclaim, the second Full Moon of a calendar month is called a Blue Moon.

 


An "Old Style" Blue Moon refers to the third of four Full Moons in one season. In 2005, there's a Full Moon on June 21, July 21, August 19 and September 17. All four of these Full Moons come to pass between the June solstice and the September equinox.

Once in a blue Moon
The phrase 'once in a blue Moon' is a familiar one meaning once in a very long interval of time. The phrase goes back to at least 1824 when an explanation of its meaning appears as a footnote attached to its use.

blue moon: there are at least two possible meanings. It can indicate a second full moon in a given calendar month. It seems that this 'meaning' was accidentally invented by Sky and Telescope magazine in 1946, but it has passed into wide usage.

Blue Moon. The second Full Moon of any month. A cycle of Lunar Phases (a Lunation)is completed in approximately 29.5 days so any month except February can have a Blue Moon.

What is a blue moon?
The answer to this question is a bit complicated. The most recent and most popular definition says that a blue moon is the second of two full moons occurring in the same month.

Blue Moon Since the time between one full moon and the next is 29-1/2 days, it is possible for a calendar month to have two full moons - one at the beginning and one at the end of the month.

Following the Rose/Flower/Strawberry Full Moon of Saturday, June 1, the Sunday June 30 return, like all second comers, will be hailed simply as the "Blue Moon".
