Bright stars are bright because they have high luminosities and/or they are nearby. Below are the 91 brightest individual stars as seen from Earth in visible wavelengths (apparent magnitude less than or equal to +2.50).

Bright stars were important to the ancient Polynesians for navigation between the many islands and atolls of the Pacific Ocean. Low on the horizon, they acted as stellar compasses to assist mariners in charting courses to particular destinations.

The bright stars Vega and Sirus are almost dead opposite of one another in the starry sky. So when one of these stars is at the verge of setting, the other star is always rising in the opposite direction.

Several bright stars appear in this small section of M101. They are in our own galaxy, superimposed in the line of sight and appear much brighter than the stars within M101 because they are so much closer.

Nova
(a) A star that brightens suddenly and to an unprecedented degree, creating the impression that a new star has appeared where none was before. Hence the name, from nova for "new".

These are very bright stars and the triangle is very recognizable in the northern hemisphere.

nine bright stars forming a G-shaped group. Seven of these stars are of 1st magnitude.

Avoid using very bright stars (magnitude 2 or 3 is good). Always re-center after each adjustment and use only slightly out-of-focus images.

There aren't many bright stars in this constellation, but there is a rather unique one. RS Ophiuchi is a type of star called a recurrent nova. These strange objects stay dim for long periods of time, and then suddenly brighten.

But five unusually bright stars - Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn behaved differently. Within a single night they would remain in a fixed position relative to the other stars.

There are only two bright stars in Canis Minor. [1537] alpha Canis Minoris or Procyon ("before the dog") is the seventh brightest star in the sky, with a magnitude of 0.34.

Apart from the four bright stars that form the cross, the constellation's stars are generally fourth-magnitude. Note that while gammaA and gammaB are labelled as binary components, these stars only form an optical double.

If there is a stellar category of "bright stars getting no respect," Avior probably holds the record. One would think all the brighter stars in the sky would have been studied in great detail. One would be wrong.

From the northeast corner, find 3 bright stars in a long line, arcing across the sky west to east, just south of Cassiopeia. From the middle of these 3 stars go north towards Cassiopeia past 1 star to a second star, in a slightly curving line.

Lupus has no extremely bright stars, but has around thirty stars of second and third magnitude and 70 of greater than sixth, including a number of binary or multiple stars.

The " beehive cluster " Praesepe in Cancer is an example of an easily resolved cluster composed of fairly bright stars.

In case you aren't sure, twinkling is the shimmering or blinking appearance that stars, especially bright stars, have.

Variable star names are descended from an old naming system for bright stars within constellations.

The closest example is the Great Nebula in Orion, a pattern of bright stars easily visible to the naked eye. This is a stellar nursery - an enormous, lumpy cloud of cold gas and dust, which turns into hundreds of new blue baby stars.

The astronomer Ptolemy expanded on the findings of the 2d-century bc astronomer Hipparchus, who had compiled the first catalog of stars and determined the positions of about 1000 bright stars.

Most famous apparently bright stars are also intrinsically bright (luminous). They can be seen from great distances away. However, most of the nearby stars are intrinsically faint.

The identity of these four stars is well known because there are, in fact, four bright stars which fit these requirements admirably.

Students will learn how to identify the bright stars and obvious constellations as seen from the Northern Hemisphere but there is a lot of "southern exposure" in the course.

Bayer's atlas was notable for another reason: it introduced the convention of labelling bright stars by Greek letters, a system that astronomers still use.

During the 20th century, observations showed that H II regions often contained hot, bright stars.

The Big Dipper consists of 7 bright stars, forming a dipper, a small pot with a long handle.

The primary is one of the hottest of the bright stars: so luminous that if placed at the distance of Sirius (just over 8 light-years), it would shine 15 times brighter than Venus.

Common names are fine for a few bright stars, but to name all the stars that we see a more systematic system was necessary.

For example, if you spot three bright stars in a row in the winter evening, you might realize, "Oh! That's part of Orion! ...

Obviously you want to take the shortest and simplest path, however, there are times when this approach is not possible due to the lack of reasonably bright stars to follow.

In early mid-northern winter evenings, Capella shines almost directly overhead, and is one of the three bright stars spread around the northern sky, the others Arcturus of spring and Vega of summer.

While a view at 24x resembled one afforded by binoculars, 48x resolved many of cluster's bright stars and transformed it into a real showpiece. I could not admire it for to long, as there were still 42 objects waiting for me.

The constellation itself is rather indistinct with few bright stars, but it is a large and rambling construction wrapped around the north celestial pole.

From the northern hemisphere, the three bright stars (Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka) in a straight line that form Orion's Belt are easily visible on the southern horizon in winter evenings.

In our vicinity of the galaxy, only a few bright stars exhibit a large enough proper motion to measure over the course of a human lifetime, so their motion does not generally enter into spacecraft navigation.

Saturn is also now flanked on both sides by three very bright stars. Fifteen degrees east of Saturn and 6.5 degrees below the ringed planet lies the star Mira. At magnitude 2, mira is one of the brightest stars in the night sky.

In the vicinity of bright stars the grains appear as glowing regions because of the intensity of the light they scatter; these regions are called reflection nebulae.

Lower numbers represent brighter objects than higher numbers; very bright star are 1st magnitude, less bright stars are 2nd magnitude, etc.

Common names are fine for a few bright stars, but we need a more systematic method to name all the stars that we see.

It is a tight cluster, containing about 50 bright stars in a region approximately 12 light-years in diameter. M47 is located about 1,600 light-years from Earth.

BAYER NAME - Combination of a Greek letter and the name of a constellation (α Centauri, ε Orionis etc.) used to identify bright stars. The system was first used by Johann Bayer in 1603.

Bright stars near reflection nebulae emit light into the region that is reflected by the large amount of dust there.

During the total eclipse, the sky is dark enough to see bright stars and the planets, if present. The main disk of the Sun is blocked by the Moon. The much dimmer corona becomes visible. Typically, the total eclipse lasts about two minutes.

It has no bright stars and was sometimes combined with the constellation of Centaurus, the centaur. The constellation is always low in the sky, south of Libra the scales and is difficult to see from the northern half of the United States.

Likely, within a few million years, the intense light from bright stars will have boiled it away completely. The cloud has broken off of part of the Carina Nebula, a star forming region about 8000 light years away.

For this search, and for the other less organised searches that came before, the astronomers compared (by eye) photographic plates of the same area of sky to search for these suddenly bright stars.

Bright stars that do not twinkle even when 60° from the zenith (or 30° above the horizon) indicate excellent seeing. (Note, however, that seeing often varies with compass direction at low visual angles.) ...

The bright stars are very unrepresentative. A typical star star would be a K or M dwarf, i.e., a small low luminosity red star.
