Caelum, or the Chisel, is a small, inconspicuous constellation in the southern hemisphere, charted by French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in the 18th century.

 


CAELUM
The modern constellation Caelum, the Engraving Tool, lies to the west and a bit south of Columba and down from an eastern bend in Eridanus. Alpha Caeli is the brightest star down and to the right of center.

Like many southern hemisphere constellations, Caelum was introduced by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in the mid-eighteenth century, designed to fill in the southern hemisphere.
