Capricornus (

, Unicode: â™'), a name meaning "Horned Goat" or "That which has horns like a goat's" in Latin, is one of the constellations of the zodiac. It is commonly called Capricorn, especially in astrology.

Capricornus has been recognized as a goat since Babylonian and Chaldean times. Usually, it is depicted as a goat with a fish tail, which might relate to a story about the god Pan. Pan, fleeing a monster called Typhon, jumed into the river Nile.

Located in the constellation Capricornus, M30 is a globular cluster of stars located about 25,000 light-years from Earth. This dense cluster is around 75 light-years in diameter and contains 12 known variable stars.

There appear to be many possible origins for Constellation Capricornus. According to some, it may represent the Shepherd-god Pan of the Ancient Greeks. Others say that he was quite a different god, Aegipan.

The brightest stars"Vega, Deneb, and Altair"form a conspicuous triangle high above the constellations Sagittarius and Capricornus, which are low on the southern horizon. In the winter sky, however, these stars are replaced, as shown in Figure 1.

The team used the Anglo-Australian Telescope at the Siding Spring Observatory to analyse light from LS IV-14 116, which resides 2,000 light years from the Sun towards the constellations of Capricornus and Aquarius.

When looking at the constellation Capricornus, for example, the ancient Aztecs saw Cipactli, the Whale. In India, Makaram, an antelope, was seen in the same constellation.

Sagittarius was reduced to just an arrow. Capricornus became the image of life, represented by a mirror. Scorpio became a serpent. Aquarius became simply water, while Taurus, Virgo and Pisces were not changed.

These dates are still used for the astrological signs, though precession of the equinoxes has shifted the constellations eastward; e.g., on January 1 the direction of the sun is now in Sagittarius instead of Capricornus.

The perihelion and Spring equinox last coincided about 16,500 years ago, almost on the border of Ophiuchus and Scorpius. They will next coincide in about 4,500 years in Sagittarius, near the border of Capricornus (see Figure 12).
