Chiron was discovered in 1977 by the American astronomer Charles Kowal and classified as an asteroid with the number 2060.
Chiron raised Asclepius as his own son, teaching him the arts of healing and hunting. Asclepius became so skilled in medicine that not only could he save lives, he could also raise the dead.
CHIRON 2060 Chiron (also known as Comet 95P/Chiron) is the largest-known centaur (half asteroid, half comet). It is in a very elliptical, unstable orbit (on a timescale of millions of years) located between Jupiter and Neptune.
Chiron was first announced as a "tenth planet," but was quickly designated as an asteroid. But Kowal suspected it may be very comet-like, and later it has even developed a short cometary tail.
95P/Chiron is the prototype of the Centaur class of comets which inhabit the dark and distant regions between Saturn and Uranus. Although discovered in 1977, its cometary nature was not revealed until 1989 when a coma developed.
2060 Chiron (also known as Comet 95P/Chiron) is the largest-known (half , half comet). It is in a very elliptical, unstable orbit (on a timescale of millions of years) located between and . Chiron is about 170 km in diameter and has a detectable .
Chiron (NASA Thesaurus) Minor planet 2060, a solar system asteroid discovered by Charles T. Kowal of Hale Observatories. Used for Minor Planet 2060.
One exception was Chiron. He was well cultured and intelligent. As tutor to Jason and his Argonauts and Hercules Chiron was placed in the sky as a constellation.
Finally, there is the case of 2060 Chiron, discovered in 1977 by Charles Kowal at the Palomar Observatory near San Diego, Calif., U.S. This object was originally classified as an asteroid, but in 1989 the American astronomers Karen J.
According to Eratosthenes (Catasterism.40) Centaurus represents the centaur Chiron. Although an centaur Chiron has been a good doctor and astronomer.
In 1977, Charles Kowal discovered 2060 Chiron, an icy planetoid with an orbit between Saturn and Uranus. He used a blink comparator; the same device that had allowed Clyde Tombaugh to discover Pluto nearly 50 years before.
The involvement in the myth of Chiron may be connected to the nearby presence of the constellation Sagittarius, which was in later times occasionally considered to represent Chiron (who was more usually identified as the constellation Centaurus).
to astrologers and astronomers such as eclipses, apparent retrogradation/planetary stations, planetary ingresses, sidereal time, positions for the Mean and True nodes of the moon, the phases of the Moon, and sometimes even the position(s) of Chiron, ...
For example, there are at least nine known objects orbiting between Jupiter and Neptune, including 2060 Chiron (aka 95 P/Chiron) and 5145 Pholus, that have been designated as "Centaurs," whose orbits are not stable.
In 1977 the asteroid Chiron was discovered in an orbit between that of Jupiter and Saturn.
It was named Chiron, after a centaur in Greek mythology (half human, half horse--an apt name for a strange object!).
This constellation represents Chiron who is frequently mentioned in Greek mythology. Chiron was one of the Centaurs, barbarous beasts which were said to be half-horse and half-human.
Equuleus is also associated with the mythical horse struck by Poseidon's trident during a contest between him and the goddess Athena, as well as with Hippe, the daughter of the centaur Chiron who hid her pregnancy from her father.
Their end status as a Jupiter-type comet (a short-period comet also thought to originate in the Kuiper Belt), is suggested by observations of the first detected Centaur, Chiron.
Ara is the altar of the centaur Chiron. Half man and half horse, Chiron was believed to be the wisest creature on Earth. It was he who first brought order to the sky by showing mortals how to draw lines between the stars to form the constellations.
According to legend Centaurus is supposed to represent, Chiron a gentle and intellectual centaur. He was the teacher of many of the heroes of ancient legends, including Hercules, Achilles, and Jason.
One of the most famous centaurs was Chiron, who was renowned for his skill in hunting, medicine, music and prophecy. He was the wisest and fairest of all centaurs and when Chiron died Jupiter put him in the sky as the constellation Sagittarius.
Both the Greeks and the Romans believed the twins were raised by the centaur, Chiron. Chiron sent them to help Jason find the Golden Fleece. The twins saved Jason's ship from a violent storm, and were honored with a place in the sky with the gods.
South of Scorpius, Ara is named after the altar of the centaur of Centaurus fame, named Chiron. Chiron, half horse, half man was thought to be the wisest creature on earth. Ara was also known as the altar that Noah built after the great flood.
Until 1997, most scientists believed Chiron was an asteroid orbiting between Saturn and Uranus. Now some astronomers think it is a comet. More study is needed to settle the disagreement. Return to the StarChild Main Page ...
Orbits range from a few years (Encke, Chiron) to about 200 years. Referred to as "periodic". Long-period Gravitationally bound, with orbits over 200 years.
The asteroid with the largest known mean distance from the Sun is 2090 Chiron which orbits the Sun between the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn. It is possibly an old comet that was perturbed into its present orbit.
Centaurs were quite abundant in ancient Greece, so no wonder two of them "climbed" into heavens! Centaurus represents the wise and thoughtful Chiron. He was a tutor of Jason (commander of Argonauts) and Asclepius (Ophiuchus).
At least 84 objects have numbers and 19 of those have names. The names include Asbolus, Bienor, Chaos, Chariklo, Chiron, Cyllarus, Deucalion, Elatus, Huya, Hylonome, Ixion, Nessus, Okyrhoe, Pelion, Pholus, Quaoar, Rhadamanthus, Thereus, and Varuna.
a host of individuals, but most authorities now seem to opt for Asclepius, or Aesculapius, which is the Latin equivalent of the Greek god of medicine. Son of Apollo and a nymph called Coronis, Asclepius was taught medicine by the centaur Chiron.
Another group of objects mostly between Saturn (9.5 A.U.) and Uranus (19.2 A.U.), called ``Centaurs'', may be an extension of the Kuiper Belt. These objects include Chiron (170 km in diameter) and Chariklo (about 240 km in diameter) and many others.
