Collapsar

Astronomy Cold dark matterCollapse

collapsar
a giant star that collapses of its own weight at the end of its normal lifetime
collimation ...

collapsar: See hypernova.
collisional broadening: The smearing out of a spectral line because of collisions among the atoms of the gas.
coma: The glowing head of a comet.

The collapsar theory holds that GRBs are produced when a massive star runs out of fuel and the star's core collapses to form a black hole surrounded by a disk of extremely hot, rapidly rotating, magnetized gas.

In the collapsar model, the core of the star collapses directly into a black hole and two extremely energetic jets of plasma are emitted from its rotational poles at nearly the speed of light.

Astronomers think short-duration GRBs are not related to supernova, meaning the collapsar/hypernova model is not applicable to them.
