Constellations are groupings of stars that seem to form a pattern as we look at them in the night sky. Most people have heard of the Big dipper and the Little dipper or even Orion the hunter but there are so many more.

Constellations directly bordering Orion are Gemini, Eridanus, Taurus, Lepus and Monoceros.

M52: The Constellation Cassiopeia
Cassiopeia is a northern constellation which greek mythology considered to represent a vain queen. It is one of the 88 modern constellations, and was also one of the 48 listed by Ptolemy.

The 3-letter abbreviation for the constellation names are used most often when objects in constellations are named, for example, alpha Cap, Cyg X-1.
The genitive form of the name is used when pronouncing the name of an object, such as a star, fully.

The following list contains the 88 official constellations as designated by the International Astronomical Union. Select any constellation to see its image.

Constellations Are Not Physical Groupings
The apparent groupings of stars into constellations that we see on the celestial sphere are not physical groupings.

Constellations
Throughout the centuries, people have looked to the stars to help them navigate across open oceans or featureless deserts, know when to plant and harvest, and preserve their myths and folklore.

CONSTELLATION FAMILY
There are many families of constellations, constellations that are either close to one another or have some other relationship.

Constellations can be a useful way to help identify positions of stars in the sky. Constellations have imaginary boundaries formed by "connecting the dots" and all the stars within those boundaries are labeled with the name of that constellation.

The constellations described in this section are a selection of those that, for one reason or another, are no longer recognized by astronomers, although they will be found on old maps.

The constellation has a famous and splendid open cluster of Praesepe (M44) at the shell of the crab.

Abstract
An explanation of the Zodiac now and 2,000 years ago.

The borders of the constellations were drawn up and finalized by the International Astronomical Union in 1930.

The patterns of the stars (constellations) always stay the same, but during the course of the night they move across the sky from East to West. This is because the earth is rotating.

Constellations
The ancient people used their imaginations to create patterns and stories of the stars. These patterns become the constellations. Each culture had its own constellations and stories.
