Decade
A period of 10 . Since there was no year 0, the years 1-10 correspond to the first decade, 11-20 to the second, etc. A new decade therefore technically begins in the years 1991, 2001, 2011, etc.

For decades it was considered obvious beyond the need for observations that elliptical galaxies were oblate objects, rotationally flattened.

For decades, Mars was considered the most likely home for life in the solar system. As observations continued to show a sterile, desolate world, though, scientists began turning their attention to Europa.

For decades, astronomers predicted the existence of substars we now call "brown dwarfs," stars too small and light (of insufficient mass, less than 0.073 solar masses) to run the full nuclear fusion process (from ordinary hydrogen to helium).

For decades, Darwinism was seldom taught, even though it was not legally prohibited. But in response to the Soviet Union's launching of Sputnik in the late 1950s, the United States Congress began pouring money into science education at all levels.

For decades planetary scientists held the belief that the composition of the SPC was mainly Carbon Dioxide (CO2) ice with traces of water (H2O) ice.

For decades astronomers have reaped the values of written records kept for over 2500 years in China and Europe.

This decade has seen the breaking or collapse of two major ice shelves -- the parts of glaciers that extend out over the ocean. In 2002, the Larsen B Ice Shelf, about the size of Rhode Island, broke off the Antarctic Peninsula's eastern coast.

A few decades later, physicists returned to the matter and demonstrated that black holes may well exist after all.

Over a decade before the discovery of the first extrasolar planets, astronomers predicted as part of the condensation model that large gas/rock clumps would form far from a young star and spiral inward toward the star because of friction with the gas ...

Over a decade later, Jupiter's atmosphere still contains remnants of the comet impact, but scientists said last week that they are puzzled by how two substances have spread into different locations.

Several decades of timing data on the pulsar PSR 0329+54 (PKS B0329+54) by Tatiana Shabanova (Lebedev Physics Institute) shows evidence of a planet with a 16.9 year period and mass greater than 2 Earth masses.

For two decades no additional moons were discovered; but between October 1999 and February 2003, researchers using sensitive ground-based detectors found another 32 moons, most of which were discovered by a team lead by Scott S. Sheppard and David C.

But for decades, the more we learned about Pluto, the less it seemed like the other 8 planets. It had an eccentric tilted orbit, which crosses Neptune's orbit.

"For two decades scientists have debated whether liquid water might have existed on the surface of Mars just a few billion years ago," said Dr. Ed Weiler, Associate Administrator for Space Science, NASA Headquarters.

The last decade has seen the growth in multifibre spectroscopy. This involves the use of optical fibres to take light from the focal plane of the telescope to a spectrograph.

Within a decade this taxonomic system was expanded, and it was recognized that the asteroid belt comprised overlapping rings of differing taxonomic classes, with classes designated S, C, P, ...

In recent decades, however, a diversity of systems have been studied that behave unpredictably despite their seeming simplicity and the fact that the forces involved are governed by well-understood physical laws.

In the last decade scientists concluded that the Universe is about 13.7 billion years old. To put this in perspective, our Sun and solar system are around 4.5 billion years old so are relatively youthful.

The opening decades of the 20th century saw three dramatic and simultaneous revolutions in physics that constitute probably the greatest reworking of mankind's view of the universe ever.

Cosmological decade 38 - 100 is known as the Black Hole era because black holes will be the only gravitaionally important objects left in the universe. However, Black holes do not last forever. They evaporate under what is known as Hawking radiation.

In the early decades of the 20th century, several scientists independently decided that these deficiencies of the nebular hypothesis were so great that it was no longer tenable.

For nearly a decade, the giant impact theory was not believed by most scientists. However, in 1984, a conference devoted to lunar origin prompted a critical comparison of the existing theories.

In the seven decades since Hubble's discovery, estimates for H0 varied from 50 to 100 km/s/Mpc. However, WMAP's 71 km/s/Mpc seem to be universally accepted as the best estimate.

In the several decades old, "bottoms-up" or "core-accretion" model, the primordial disk of gas and dust that coalesced into the planetesimals and formed the planets and other planetary bodies was colder in the outer Solar System, ...

decade (NASA SP-7, 1965) 1. The interval between any two quantities having the ratio of 10:1.
2. A group of series of 10.

Over a few short decades, our eyes have become gigantic slabs of delicately hewn glass, our attention has become riveted by intricate guiding mechanisms, and our memories have been etched on fine-grain films and computer hardware.

Once every three decades or so, the Leonid meteor shower blazes forth with between hundreds and thousands of meteors per hour. One of these impressive shows should occur around the middle of November in either this year and/or next year.

During the past few decades, infrared astronomy has become a major field of science due to rapid advances in infrared detector technology. Many of these advances arose from U.

scale of 10 counter (NASA SP-7, 1965) = decade counter. scaler (NASA Thesaurus / NASA SP-7, 1965) A device that produces an output pulse whenever a prescribed number of input pulses have been received. Also called scaling circuit.

In the 1970s the Skylab space station and Orbiting Solar Observatory satellites continued the study, as did the Solar Maximum Mission the following decade.

By 2368, the Satarrans had been at war with the Lysian race for decades. In that year, the Satarrans attempted to use the USS Enterprise-D to launch a devastating attack against the Lysian Central Command.

After some time (years, or perhaps even decades), the material that accumulates on the surface of the white dwarf will ignite in an explosive blast. This explosion has a brightness about 100,000 times greater than the Sun's luminosity.

Over the course of 6 decades NASA, and its predecessor NACA, has launched 30 missions within projects Mercury and Gemini, not to mention the countless flights made by the five space shuttles.

"I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal before the decade is out of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth".
Back at Langley airforce base the astronauts listened with disbelief.

Lets look at the first decade.
Note the first year is one not zero. Normal methods of counting have the concept of a zero value.

We have worked for decades to reproduce this process (in a controlled manner) here on Earth. Most of these efforts involve extremely hot plasmas in strong magnetic fields.

Much has been learned about the Moon in the last few decades but there is still a lot to discover.

Robotic missions are structured over decades of planning to complement each other. Flyby spacecraft conduct the initial reconnaissance, followed by orbiters and, in many cases landers.

Two supernovae have been observed in it in the last decade: SN 2002ap and SN 2003gd. Because the galaxy's spiral arms are so clearly defined, Messier 74 is one of the best examples of a grand design spiral galaxy.

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.

During the next four decades, more than 4600 spacecraft of all varieties were launched, mostly in earth orbit. The overwhelming majority of these were launched by the Soviet Union and the U.S.

The speed record for a purely propeller-driven airplane, 463 mph, was attained in Germany before the war (in 1939) and stood for decades. The current record is 528.

What countries provided all of the artificial satellites during the first decade of space exploration?
What was the important data provided by the first American satellite, Explorer I?

C/2006 P1 McNaught was the brightest comet in decades and could be seen during the day. As with C/1996 B2 Hyakutake, the solar observing spacecraft Ulysses passed through the tail.

It is the oldest search method for extrasolar planets, using precise measurements of a star's position in sky over a long period of time (years, decades) to look for shifts ("wobbles") in position relative to other more distant stars.

An energy conversion efficiency of about 29% was achieved in July 2000, and gains of a few more percent may be possible over the next decades. Crystalline silicon and gallium arsenide are typical choices of materials for deep-space applications.

It was frequently used by Pickering, Lowell, See and Douglass at Harvard over the following decades.
