Mintaka ( Delta Orionis) is the uppermost and faintest of the three major stars that form belt of Orion, a constellation in the Northern Hemisphere (the other two stars in the belt ate Alnitak and Alnilam).

(Number 7 is Alnilam, Delta Orionis.) The name (oddly, originally applied to Capella) translates from Latin as "the female warrior" (a contrast with Orion as a giant warrior rather than as a hunter), and sometimes as the "Amazon Star.

In this historic study of the spectrum and orbit of Delta Orionis, Hartmann observed the light coming from this star and realized that some of this light was being absorbed before it reached the Earth.
