DIADEM (Alpha Comae Berenices). Not quite the brightest star in Coma Berenices (Berenices Hair), the Alpha star just loses out to Beta. The prominent portion of Coma Berenices is the beautiful Coma Berenices cluster.

The leading star of this constellation, alpha Com, also known as Diadem, is a binary which cannot be splitted into its components by amateur telescopes. On the other hand the double 24 Com is an attraktive object for small telescopes.
Alpha Comae, sometimes called Diadem, has the same diameter as our Sun, and is 62 light years away with a luminosity of nearly three. It's a rapid motion binary (see below) and in the same field is the globular cluster M53 (see below).
