Diamond Ring Effect
Just as totality begins during a solar eclipse a small portion of the Suns photosphere can peak out from behind the moon through a valley at the edge of the lunar disk. It is not visible during every solar eclipse.

diamond ring effect: A momentary phenomenon seen during some total solar eclipses when the ring of the corona and a bright spot of photosphere resemble a large diamond set in a silvery ring.

DIAMOND RING:
The "Diamond Ring" is a large burst of light that appears a few seconds before and after totality.

It is safe to observe the total phase of a solar eclipse directly with the unaided eye, binoculars or a telescope, when the Sun's photosphere is completely covered by the Moon; indeed, it is too dim to be seen through filters.

The "Diamond Ring" is a large burst of light that appears a few seconds before and after during a . The "Diamond Ring" is caused by the last bit of sunlight shining through valleys on the edge of the .

Small "beads" of sunlight (the "diamond ring" effect) which shine through the valleys on the limb of the Moon in the instant before (or after) totality in a solar eclipse.

During the moments before the total eclipse, various features can be seen; amongst them is the diamond ring effect, where it appears as if the last bit of sunshine makes a diamond ring in the sky.

The last flash of light from the surface of the Sun as it disappears from view behind the Moon gives the appearance of a diamond ring and is called, appropriately, the diamond ring effect (image at right).

s, diamond rings, a diamond brooch and a diamond necklace. Both of Napoleon's wives had beautiful sets such as these and wore them regularly. Another fashion trend resurrected by Napoleon was the cameo.

Parts of the intensely bright photosphere of the Sun shining through valleys at the edge of the Moon at the start and end of totality in a solar eclipse. When only one part of the photosphere shines through, it is known as the 'diamond ring'.

The main disk of the Sun is blocked by the Moon. The much dimmer corona becomes visible. Typically, the total eclipse lasts about two minutes. Then, you see the diamond ring again and the total eclipse is over.

During a solar eclipse the moon blocks the Sun on a particular region of the Earth for a few seconds, creating a "diamond ring" effect moments before the actual eclipse.

and eroded, although it retains a generally circular form. A smaller crater 'Gassendi A' is intruding into the northern rim, and joins a rough uplift at the northwest part of the floor. The crater pair bears a curious resemblance to a diamond ring.

And finally, just as the last bead is visible, light from the Sun's outer atmosphere will start to be visible around the Moon, creating a glowing ring of light. This is called the "Diamond Ring Effect.'' ...
