Red dwarf stars are believed to be the most common star type in the universe. Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to the Sun is a red dwarf, (Type M5, magnitude 11.0) as are twenty of the next thirty nearest.

White dwarf stars mark the evolutionary endpoint of low to intermediate mass stars like our Sun.

The hot, compact remains of a low-mass star like our Sun that has exhausted its sources of fuel for thermonuclear fusion. White dwarf stars are generally about the size of the Earth.

A Small Brown Dwarf Star
One of the smallest star's ever observed is that of the brown dwarf orbiting a cool red star Gliese 229, called Gliese 229B (GL229B). But is it really a star?

Not all white-dwarf stars are found as the cores of planetary nebulae. Several hundred have been discovered "naked" in our Galaxy, their envelopes expelled to invisibility (or perhaps stripped away by a binary companion"as discussed shortly) long ago.

Stars also differ greatly in size from giants that would swallow up half our solar system to superdense dwarf stars. When stars are in main sequence it is the larger stars that burn up their fuel more quickly and die.
