The dynamo effect is a geophysical theory that explains the origin of the Earth's main magnetic field in terms of a self-exciting (or self-sustaining) dynamo.

dynamo effect: The process by which a rotating, convecting body of conducting matter, such as Earth's core, can generate a magnetic field.

The magnetic fields in galaxies are thought to arise from a dynamo effect: a small initial field, generated perhaps by turbulence, becomes amplified and ordered as it is wound up by the rotation of the galactic disk.

Rotating planets or moons with molten cores will produce magnetic fields through "the dynamo effect." In a planet like the Earth, the molten core can flow freely in a process called convection.

It is likely that this magnetic field is generated by way of a dynamo effect, in a manner similar to the magnetic field of Earth. This dynamo effect would result from the circulation of the planet's iron-rich liquid core.

In a circuit of this sort, where one conductor moves relative to the other in a way which (at least in part) cuts across magnetic field lines, a dynamo effect is created, using energy of the relative motion to generate an electric current.

This conductive layer combines with Earth's rotation to create a dynamo effect that maintains a system of electrical currents known as the Earth's magnetic field. It is also responsible for the subtle jerking of Earth's rotation.

Venus has no detectable magnetic field, almost certainly because the planet's rotation is too slow for any appreciable dynamo effect to occur.

Everyone had thought that Mercury was far too small to support the required core of molten iron to generate a magnetic field via the dynamo effect. This field is a weak one, only 1 percent of the strength of the Earth's magnetic field.

At the first close approach, instruments detected a magnetic field, to the great surprise of planetary geologists-Mercury's rotation was expected to be much too slow to generate a significant dynamo effect.

The differently charged electromagnetic layers produced by the dynamo effect on the earth's geomagnetic field enable the appearance of the aurora borealis.

not completely understood, but is thought to be associated with electrical currents produced by the coupling of convective effects and rotation in the spinning liquid metallic outer core of iron and nickel. This mechanism is termed the dynamo effect.
