Elevation
The angle above the of a celestial object also called the and equal to 90° minus the .

 


elevation: see altitude.
ellipse: a conic section and the path the Earth follows during a year (neglecting only the small perturbations caused by the moon and the other planets). It is defined by two foci, and by a major and a minor axis.

Elevation
The angle in degrees above the horizon toward the zenith or overhead point. Sometimes loosely called the "altitude" of a star, but not to be confused with height above sea level.

Elevation of Sun. The angle between the position of the Sun's center in the sky and the point nearest to it on the horizon.

The elevation of the land surface of the Earth varies from the low point of âˆ'418 m at the Dead Sea, to a 2005-estimated maximum altitude of 8,848 m at the top of Mount Everest. The mean height of land above sea level is 686 m.

Each elevation point is known with an accuracy of 13 meters (42 feet) on average, with large areas of the flat northern hemisphere known to better than two meters (a little over 6 feet).

Unfavourable conditions are moonlight, nearness to the Milky Way, and elevation of the light above the horizon (and therefore a depression of the sun below the horizon) of less than 20°, and the presence in the region of any bright planet.

The entire surface of the planet is dry and rocky; because there is no "sea level," elevations are given as planetary radius--i.e., as the distance from the centre of the planet to the surface.

Elevation (or altitude), the angle between the observer's horizon and the star (angle E in figure 4). Straight up is 90 degrees, the horizon is 0 degrees. For the North Star, the elevation equals the geographic latitude.

The low elevation maria (seas) have fewer craters than other areas. This is because these areas formed more recently, and have had less time to be hit. The biggest intact lunar crater is Clavius which is 100 miles (160 km) in diameter.

If you have ever cooked food at high elevations using boiling water, you know that it takes longer because water boils at a lower temperature than at sea level. That is because the air pressure at high elevations is less.

This depends on the amount of heating that the earth receives in a single day throughout the year, and this depends on how many hours the sun is above the horizon and exactly how long it spends at its highest elevation above the horizon.

The best time for observing is after midnight when the radiant reaches a reasonable elevation. pi-Puppids, peak April 23 The pi-Puppids are produced by Comet 26P/Grigg-Skjellerup. The hourly rate is variable, up to 40 an hour have been recorded.

However, at an elevation of 2 km, k is about 48.8", a 19% reduction in refraction from sea level. For 400 (blue), 500, 600 and 700 (red) nm wavelengths, the corresponding STP k values are 60.4", 57.8", 57.4", and 57.2", respectively.

In contrast, most of the northern hemisphere consists of plains which are much younger, lower in elevation and have a much more complex history. An abrupt elevation change of several kilometers seems to occur at the boundary.

An alt/az mount must have a fiduciary mark such that the tube can be placed accurately at 90 degrees to the elevation axis. One way to do this is to (one time only) level the ground board, then the tube.

In ancient times Cancer was where the Sun appeared at its maximum mid-day elevation at the time of the (northern) summer solstice. Because of the precession of the equinoxes the northern summer solstice now occurs when the Sun is in Taurus.

Candidate landing sites had to be near the equator, low in elevation, not too steep, not too rocky and not too dusty.

The elevation of Alpha Regio varies over a range of 4 km (2.5 mi). Low-lying areas appear dark in the radar images and may be filled with lava. Volcanoes appear as bright spots on the smooth plains. Notice the large volcano in the upper right.

Some mountain peaks reach elevations of 4 or 5 kilometers above the lunar surface! They are particularly striking when the terminator is nearby.

The southern hemisphere is predominantly ancient cratered highlands. The majority of the northern hemisphere has plains which are much younger and lower in elevation. An abrupt elevation change of several kilometers seems to occur at the boundary.

At present, around a third of ALMA's eventual 66 radio antennas make up the growing array on the Chajnantor plateau in northern Chile, at an elevation of 5,000 meters.

These craters range in size up to many hundreds of kilometers, but the most enormous craters have been flooded by lava, and only parts of the outline are visible. The low elevation maria (seas) have fewer craters than other areas.

This means that when working with ground based telescopes they should be viewed when they are as high in the sky as possible and from as high elevations are as possible.

A major difference between geocentric and topocentric ephemerides is that no local horizon exists (and therefore derived quantities such as azimuth and elevation are not defined) for a geocentric ephemeris.

Thermal gradients at different elevations in the atmosphere are usually responsible for the quality of the seeing. Seeing also usually deteriorates for objects closer to the horizon because the light has to pass through a greater air mass.

Refraction within the thermal cells also causes the color of the object to rapidly change. The altitude or elevation about the horizon also effects astronomical seeing due to the increase in airmass.

The reason for the difference between it and the DALR is that latent heat is released when water cools and condenses. The actual lapse rate varies with elevation.
