ELNATH (Beta Tauri). Equally well called El Nath, Elnath lies at the tip of the great northern horn of Taurus, the Bull.

 


Elnath is a blue B7III giant about 300 times as luminous as the sun. The spectrum indicates that the star is surrounded by an expanding shell of material expelled from the star.

Its Arabic name (also written as Elnath, El Nath, and Nath) means the "butting one" - appropriate to its position at the tip of the Bull's northern horn.

Marking the left horn of the bull is the star Alnath (also spelled Elnath), a name that comes from the Arabic meaning ‘the butting one'.

Aldebaran is viewed by some as the glowing eye of the Bull, with white star Beta Tauri (Elnath) as its pushing horn and the Hyades star cluster forming its head.
