Eltanin is a cool, orange K5III giant about 200 times as luminous as the sun. The spectral type implies an effective temperature of about 3800 K, a mass of 5.0 solar masses and a diameter 25 times that of the sun.
Its brightest star is second-magnitude Gamma Draconis, called Etamin or Eltanin, from the Arabic al-tinnin meaning ‘the serpent'.

Although Thuban's Bayer designation is Draconis, it is not the brightest star in the constellation. At magnitude 3.65, it is more than a magnitude fainter than the brightest star, Draconis (Eltanin), whose magnitude is 2.23.
