Extrasolar planets occasionally pass in front of and block a small fraction of the light from their parent star in transits. Kepler will use a 0.95 metre aperture optical telescope and instruments to look for sets of three transits around each star.

Over 270 extrasolar planets have been discovered since the early 1990s, and only 45 have been detected by the transit method.
Over 200 extrasolar planets have been confirmed, mostly by indirect methods, and Hubble recently added to the tally by finding evidence for possibly 16 Jupiter-sized planets24 in a small patch of sky towards the galactic center.

Almost all extrasolar planets (those outside our solar system) discovered to date have masses which are about the same or larger than the gas giants within the solar system.

Want to know how astronomers detected the extrasolar planets?
It is not easy to detect another planet so far away from Earth. Unlike stars which are fueled by nuclear reactions, planets only reflect the optical light of their stellar companion.
Thus far, none of the reports of nearby extrasolar planets has claimed an object of Earth dimensions. In fact, many of the findings to date indicate "hot Jupiters""gigantic planets surprisingly close (within 1 A.U.) to their parent star.
It is the oldest search method for extrasolar planets, using precise measurements of a star's position in sky over a long period of time (years, decades) to look for shifts ("wobbles") in position relative to other more distant stars.
Occultation may be one method of identifying extrasolar planets (also known as "exoplanets") by measuring the slightly reduced brightness of a distant star as one of its planets happens to pass in front of it as viewed from Earth.
