Fireball networks. A very significant development in meteor science occurred during the 1960s. This was the establishment of large-scale networks for photographing very bright meteors, or fireballs.

Fireballs were much in the news over the past month due to a big one that was seen in the Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana areas around local midnight on March 26 - 27, 2003. The fireball streaked across the sky and exploded in a bright flash.

Japanese amateur astronomer Masayuki Tachikawa caught the possible fireball event in a video at 18:22 UT on 20 August as a brief, two second, brightening near the north edge of Jupiter's Northern Equatorial Belt.

A fireball is a brighter-than-usual meteor. The International Astronomical Union defines a fireball as "a meteor brighter than any of the planets" (magnitude -4 or greater).

Nuclear fireball A sphere of extremely hot gas (or part of a sphere, for explosions near the ground) formed around the explosion of a nuclear bomb.

FIREBALL
A fireball is any meteor that is brighter than Venus (magnitude -4). A sonic boom often follows a fireball and they can cast a shadow. They are caused by millimeter-sized (or bigger) meteoroids disintegrating in the atmosphere.

The fireball created by the terminal explosion will spew vaporized comet material to very high altitudes as it expands and balloons upward. It may carry with it atmospheric gases that are normally to be found only far below Jupiter's visible clouds.

The fireball was most luminous over Nevada. Sky watchers as far away as 100 miles from the reentry path could see the capsule glowing 10 to 100 times brighter than Venus. In fact, the light was as bright as a fat crescent Moon.

The basic cause of nuclear winter, as hypothesized by researchers, would be the numerous and immense fireballs caused by exploding nuclear warheads.

Those which are tougher survive longer and produce fireballs as their surface undergo melting and ablation at temperatures of several thousand degrees.

A sonic boom is a very loud sound that is caused by a shock wave (pressure disturbance in the air) coming from an object which is traveling faster than the speed of sound. Fireballs and some fast aircraft can cause sonic booms.

A spherical fireball would have no such abrupt transition. One way to see this is to note that initially, for a highly relativistic expansion, the jet and sphere will produce identical observed properties.

On almost any dark night, at least a few meteors may be seen. There are many more during several yearly meteor showers. Some display impressive fireballs, leaving cloudy trails behind.

This shower is known for its bright fireballs.
