Footpoint
the intersection of magnetic loops with the photosphere.
Free Electron
an electron that has broken free of it's atomic bond and is therefore not bound to an atom.

footpoint (Solar Physics Glossary - NASA GSFC) The intersection of magnetic loops with the photosphere. footprints (NASA Thesaurus) Ground patterns or contours of an acoustical or microwave nature that are predictable and measurable.

We often find bright areas at the footpoints of these features that are associated with small magnetic regions on the solar surface. These structures are associated with the "open" magnetic field lines at the Sun's poles.

Anchored in the photosphere (a rigid, line-tied, anchor is assumed where the high-β; external plasma holds the loop footpoints in place), coronal loops project through the chromosphere and transition region, extending high into the corona.
