Galaxies are not generally found in isolation. Most are surrounded by a swarm of satellite galaxies and are themselves embedded in larger aggregates called groups or clusters.
Galaxies are not scattered randomly throughout the universe, but are often found in "clusters," which are in turn parts of larger groupings called "super-clusters." How did these structures of the universe come about?
For galaxies at distances where you can't see individual stars, the distance is found by multiplying the by a number called the H0.

Radio galaxies are active galaxies that emit most of their energy in the radio part of the spectrum. They are generally comparable to the Seyferts in total energy output. Unlike Seyferts, they are usually associated with elliptical galaxies.
Early Galaxies
Note: These objects tend to be extremely distant from Sol, in space and even time. Many are also extremely large, massive, dense, energetic, ancient, or young. All have been estimated to be over 100 light-years (ly) -- or 30.
Radio galaxies
Most galaxies probably emit radio waves and do so at energies comparable to that of our own galaxy-about 1032 W. In the cases of the so-called radio galaxies, however, the radio emission is up to 100 million times stronger.
Spiral Galaxies
Spiral galaxies get their name from the shape of their disks, in which stars, gas and dust are concentrated in spiral arms that extend outward from the central nucleus of the galaxies.

How many galaxies are there in the universe?
This is a question that continually puzzles astronomers and is subject to frequent revision. The reason for this is because we can only see so far with the instruments we have available to us today.
In spiral galaxies such as our own Milky Way the GMCs tend to be concentrated along the spiral arms and can be seen as the dark dust bands in the arms. We see some of the closer dense molecular clouds as absorption or dark nebulae.
Lenticular Galaxies So-called because they appear to be shaped like lenses. A lenticular galaxy has a spherically shaped component like an elliptical galaxy, and a disk. It is generally gas poor and contains few if any young stars.
