Astronomy Gamma PegasiGamma Persei

[6457] gamma Persei, also known as Al Fakhir or Alpecher ("the excellent one") and Seid ("forearm"), is another multiple star system. It consists of a yellow giant and a white companion star. The system lies approximately 260 light-years away.

The stars alpha Persei, gamma Persei, tau Persei, and iota Persei form Perseus' head: gamma Persei is of the third magnitude. Stars gamma Persei, eta Persei, and tau Persei form Perseus' cap.

Struve 331 is a splendid fixed binary: 5.4, 6.8; PA 85º, separation 12.1". It's found midway on a line between gamma Persei and tau Persei and just a bit south.
h1123 is a fine wide binary in the middle of M34: 8.5, 8.5; PA 248º, separation 20.0".

The star can be found next to Mirfak (Alpha Persei), northwest of Delta Persei, northeast of Algol (Beta Persei), and southwest of Tau, Eta, and Gamma Persei.

Eclipsing binaries may therefore be detected by brightness variations of the binary system. The most famous are beta Persei (Algol), which varies from 3.4 to 2.1 over 2.87 days, and gamma Persei, which varies by three magnitudes over 14 years.

7, with current estimates stating its magnitude to be as high as 2.2 (1.6 times as bright). The actual figure is fairly subjective at this moment in time, though amateur astronomers say it compares well with the stars gamma persei and delta persei in ...
