Gamma Ray Burster Gamma ray bursts were first detected by U. S. military Vela satellites launched in 1963 to monitor Soviet compliance with the nuclear test ban treaty.
In 1995 a debate was held at the National Academy of Sciences on the nature of the Gamma Ray Bursters. Virginia Trimble wrote an entertaining and elightening review paper on the Curtis-Shapley Debate on the existence of external galaxies.
Perhaps they come from outside the Galaxy, from active galactic nuclei, quasars or gamma ray bursters.
