GEMINI (" The Twins," i.e. Castor and Pollux), in astronomy, the third sign in the zodiac, denoted by the symbol II. It is also a constellation, mentioned by Eudoxus (4th century B.e.) and Aratus (3rd century B.

Geminids
The Geminids are a meteor shower caused by an object named 3200 Phaethon, which is thought to be an extinct comet. The meteors from this shower can seen in mid-December and usually peak around 12-14 December.

Gemini Program (1962-1966)
Overview
The Gemini program was made of mainly twelve launched vehicles. Two of them were unmanned, while the last ten carried two people into Earth orbit each.

Gemini, the twins:
An ancient constellation of the zodiac and one of the only that resembles its namesake. The twins of Gemini, Castor and Pollux, were sons of Zeus and the mortal woman Leda. They were brothers of Helen of Troy.

Gemini represents the twins Castor and Polydeuces (Pollux is the Latin form of his name); they were known to the Greeks as the Dioscuri, literally meaning ‘sons of Zeus'.

Gemini 9, 10 and 11 proved successful in knocking down the obstacles that stood between them and the moon....except one.

Gemini was named after a constellation. The name means 'twins.' This name was used because the Gemini capsule would carry two people.

Project Gemini:
The second U.S. manned space program was announced in January 1962. Its two-man crew gave it its name, Gemini, for the third constellation of the Zodiac and its twin stars, Castor and Pollux.

Because of its two main stars, Gemini is easy to find in the northern part of the southern summer sky. It is seen north east of Orion and at about the same declination of the Hyades and Pleiades to the west of Orion.

Gemini Program
The Gemini program was designed to investigate in actual flight many of the critical situations which we would face later in the voyage of Apollo. The spacecraft carried an onboard propulsion system for maneuvering in Earth orbit.

Geminid meteor shower
Different type of meteor showers can make pretty light shows. They dazzle millions of observers around the globe. They have been called many things over the years; shooting stars and falling stars are the most common names.

Astronomers with the Gemini Observatory say they may have captured the first picture of a planet orbiting another Sun-like star. The star, 1RXS
J160929.1-210524, is about 500 light-years away, and is much younger the Sun.

This object is the parent body of the Geminid meteor stream, the concentration of meteoroids responsible for the annual Geminid meteor shower seen on Earth each December.

As such, it is intimately associated with legends concerning the constellation of Gemini, which it is in contact with. Firstly, with Gemini, it may form the origin of the myth of Castor and Polydeuces, concerning cattle raiding.

The Italian astronomer Geminiano Montanari recorded observing variations in luminosity of the star Algol in 1667.

It was followed (in the US) by "Gemini" whose two-man capsules were orbited by the more powerful Titan rocket. Then came the three-man "Apollo" missions, first flying around the Moon and then landing on its surface, on July 20, 1969.

During one month, Mars would be seen in Gemini and then after several weeks it would gradually move over to Cancer.

After the Mercury project, Project Gemini was launched to conduct experiments and work out issues relating to a moon mission. The first Gemini flight with astronauts on board, Gemini 3, was flown by Gus Grissom and John Young on March 23, 1965.
