The Great Red Spot on the face of Jupiter has been in place since the early 1600's when telescopes were first used to observe surface features on the Sun, Moon and planets, thus is it very stable.

The colorful, wavy cloud pattern to the left of the Red Spot is a region of extraordinarily complex wave motion. This dramatic view of the Great Red Spot and its surroundings was taken February 25, 1979, when Voyager 1 was 9.

Jupiter's Great Red Spot

GREAT RED SPOT
Jupiter's Great Red Spot is a huge, long-lasting storm in the atmosphere of the Southern Hemisphere of Jupiter (near the equator). Its color is actually pink to orange. This whirlwind varies in size and color from year to year.

The Great Red Spot is a complex storm moving in a counter-clockwise direction. At its outer edge, material appears to rotate in four to six days; near the center, motions are small and nearly random in direction.

The Great Red Spot is an anticyclonic storm which rotates with a period of 10 hours. The red coloration could be caused by photochemical products of sulfur of phosphorus compounds.

The Great Red Spot is a huge storm measuring 12,000 by 25,000 km (7,500 by 15,500 miles), which is big enough to hold two Earths side by side.

The largest of these storms is the Great Red Spot. This spot is so large that you could fit two or three Earths inside it, depending on its size (it's a storm, so it can get bigger or smaller over time).

The Color of the Atmosphere
The explanation for the color of Jupiter's clouds is still something of a mystery.

The Great Red Spot, which is a typhoon in the atmosphere, is red in color due to the presence of sulphuric compounds. Unlike the typhoon on Earth, it is much larger and persistent.

A good amateur telescope should show you Jupiter's North and South Equatorial Belts, plus Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

One of Jupiter's most famous features is the Great Red Spot. It is a giant spinning storm, resembling a hurricane. At its widest point, the storm is about three-and-a-half times the diameter of Earth. Jupiter is a very windy planet.

They took lots of pictures of moons, rings, and Jupiter's Great Red Spot. They discovered the volcanoes on Io and the Jovian rings. Now in deep space, they are still active. They are going a bit slower than theory says they should. No one knows why.

Jupiter's most prominent features are distinctly coloured bands across its latitudes and the Great Red Spot, which is a storm in the planet's upper atmosphere with the same size as the planet Earth.

These bands are made more apparent by the pastel colors of the clouds themselves, including the famous ocher-colored oval called the Great Red Spot. The colors come from traces of compounds formed by ultraviolet light, lightning discharges, and heat.

These are caused by different belts of cloud in the Jovian atmoshere.
In a larger telescope, the Great Red Spot can be seen.
