Grus lies just below Piscis Austrinus, and at one time was part of that constellation. Grus (The Crane) was so named by Johann Bayer, as listed in his 1603 star atlas.

Grus, the crane:
Created in 1603 by Johann Bayer. Grus can be found south of the constellation of Piscis Austrinus, the southern fish. It contains two second magnitude stars, and is most easily visible from southern locations in the United States.

Grus cranes its neck in the Uranographia of Johann Bode.
Grus was formed from stars south of Piscis Austrinus, the Southern Fish.

Grus, the Crane, is a small constellation of the Southern Hemisphere. Lying just below Piscis Austrinus (the Southern Fish), Grus was at one time part of that constellation.
