Hadar is an Arabic word meaning "Ground."
Another name for the star is Agena. According to a note in Allen, this name appears to be a compound of the letter "A" for alpha and "gena" meaning knee.

Hadar is also useful as a guide star, making an imaginary line with Rigil Kentaurus that passes within a few degrees of Gacrux, in the constellation Crux. Using Gacrux, a navigator can draw a line with Acrux to effectively determine south.
Beta Centauri (Hadar) is the tenth brightest star in the heavens, at 0.61 visual magnitude (which is actually the combined values of its two components). It's 525 light years distant and is a rather difficult visual binary (see below).
Deep in southern Centaurus, Epsilon Cen provides the link between the sprawling northern part of the huge constellation and the pair of first magnitude stars (Rigil-Kent and Hadar) that both anchor it and lead the eye to the Southern Cross.

Beta Centauri (proper name Hadar) is a blue-white super giant and in about 4,000 years, the proper motion of Alpha Centauri will carry it close enough to Beta Centauri that they will appear to be a magnificent double star.
The brightest star in the constellation is [6920] zeta Puppis, also known as Naos ("ship") and Suhail Hadar ("roaring bright one"). It is an extremely hot star as well as one of the rare O-type stars visible to the naked eye.
