Hercules Atonement
Upon coming to himself, Hercules was stricken by grief and remorse at what he had done and appealed to the Oracle at Delphi as to what he could do to atone for the tragedy.

Hercules was commemorated with the ancient Babylonian constellation depicting Ninurta (god of war) sometime in the second century B.C. It seems more than fit.

Hercules, the strongman:
One of the most ancient constellations in the night sky. This group of stars has been recognized as a hero for millennia. Once the story of Hercules become popular this constellation was given his name.

HERCULES
Hercules is a Northern Hemisphere that is the fifth largest in the sky. It is named for Hercules, the legendary hero of Greek mythology. The brightest of its rather dim stars is Ras Algethi (alpha Her), a variable red supergiant.

These are just five of many different star names. There are so many more that you will want to look at. You will recognize some of them but others you will have never heard of.

Meanwhile, Hercules Florence had already created a very similar process in 1832, naming it Photographie, and William Fox Talbot had earlier discovered another means to fix a silver process image but had kept it secret.

The plane is a Hercules LC-130, a cargo plane equipped with skis. Before you board the plane, you need to put on all that cold-weather clothing as a safety precaution in case the plane crashes (see photo, top of page ).

Also known as the Hercules cluster, M13 is perhaps the finest and most well known globular cluster in the Northern hemisphere. It originally was discovered by Edmond Halley in 1714.

Mythology: Cancer, the Crab, plays a minor role in the Twelve Labors of Hercules. While Hercules was busy fighting the multi-headed monster, Hydra, the goddess Hera, who did not like Hercules, sent the Crab to distract him.

Quite fittingly, Hercules is just to the east of Draco. In fact, some cartographers draw the figure of Hercules with one foot resting on the head of Draco.

The most famous globular cluster visible from the Northern Hemisphere is M13 in the constellation Hercules, visible on spring and summer evenings. This cluster contains half a million or so of the Galaxy's most ancient stars.

While performing this task, Draco was tragically slain by The Hero, Hercules, who stole away with the golden apples, which became a symbol of his immortality.

Mimas was a Titan who was slain by Hercules. William Herschel discovered the moon in 1789. The surface is icy and heavily cratered. Mimas has a low density, meaning it probably consists mostly of ice.

These appear to have affinities in a tuning-fork pattern:
with concentration generally increasing leftward. However, some poor clusters do have cD galaxies, perhaps the result of runaway merging.

Mimas was one of the Titans slain by Hercules.
Discovered in 1789 by Herschel.
Mimas' low density (1.17) indicates that it is composed mostly of water ice with only a small amount of rock.

One of the most dramatic examples of globular clusters, the Great Cluster in Hercules, can be found less than 27 degrees away from the Ring Nebula, in the constellation Hercules.

Hundreds of galaxies sprinkle the sky in this view of Abell 2151, a vast galaxy cluster in Hercules. It is about 500 million light-years away.

HD156668b is located approximately 80 light years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Hercules. The discovery was made as part of the Eta-Earth Survey for Low Mass Planets, which has so far uncovered two near-Earth planets.

The signal was directed to M13, a globular cluster in Hercules containing nearly 200,000 stars. Unfortunately it lies at a distance of 24,000 light years from the Earth so any reply will not be received for nearly 50,000 years! ...
