In astrology, a horoscope is a chart or diagram representing the positions of the planets, other celestial bodies, and sensitive angles at the time of any event, such as a person's birth.

A horoscope was calculated normally for the moment of an individual's birth, or at the beginning of an enterprise or event, because the alignments of the heavens at that moment were thought to determine the nature of the subject in question.

Central to horoscopic astrology and its branches is the calculation of the horoscope or astrological chart.

In his Tetrabiblos, he applied astronomy to astrology and the casting of horoscopes. Of considerable historical importance, despite considerable factual inaccuracies, is Ptolem's Geography, which charts the then-known world.

Be aware, however, that the "sign" assigned to each month in horoscopes is not the constellation where the Sun is in that month, but where it would have been in ancient times.

If you were to look in a newspaper at a horoscope column, you can determine what your "sign" is by the date of your birth. What does the date have to do with it?

Many giants in the development of modern astronomy payed the bills by casting horoscopes for patrons, even as they were simultaneously laying the foundation for a new world view that would leave no place for astrology and related hokum.

Today most people recognize that astrology is nothing more than an amusing diversion (although millions still study their horoscope in the newspaper every morning!).

The earliest astronomers were priests, and no attempt was made to separate astronomy from astrology. In fact, an early motivation for the detailed study of planetary positions was the preparation of horoscopes.
