HYDRA
Hydra, the Water Serpent, begins its winding way from upper right toward lower left. The longest of constellations, Hydra wraps around a quarter of the sky. Here we see the western two-thirds, the remainder diving south of Virgo.

Hydra, the sea serpent:
Hydra is the largest and the longest constellation in the night sky. The stars that make up Hydra represent the sea serpent that Hercules was forced to defeat as one of his Twelve Labors.

Hydra is the largest of the 88 modern constellations at over 1,300 square degrees, extending over 100° of sky. Despite its enormous size, it is hard to identify because the stars are so faint.

Hydra is the largest of the 88 constellations, winding a quarter of the way around the sky. Its head is south of the constellation Cancer, the Crab, while the tip of its tail lies between Libra, the Scales, and Centaurus, the Centaur.

Hydra is a very weird constellation. It is the largest constellation on the sky (with Virgo close behind), but is strung out from Libra to Canis Minor along the southern horizon over about 90 degrees.

Hydraulic action takes place when air in a joint is suddenly compressed by a wave closing the entrance of the joint. This then cracks it. Wave pounding is when the sheer energy of the wave hitting the cliff or rock breaks pieces off.

The hydrazine tank can be seen mid-right on the illustration below, which shows the entire Cassini Propulsion Module Subsystem. The four hydrazine Thruster Clusters (4 thrusters on each) are also visible.

This hydraulic jack lifitng process is done at constant speed. If the two pistons are at different levels, as they usually are in real jacks used for lifting, there's a pressure difference between the two pistons due to height difference (rho)gh.

Nix and Hydra are very close to a 1:4:6 orbital resonance with the Charon-Pluto orbital period: Nix is within 2.7% of resonance, while Hydra is within 0.3%, though neither are in an exact resonance.

The main 596 N thruster wil use hydrazine and N2O4 propellant. Control is through 12 4.45 N hydrazine thrusters, mounted in four groups of three (two aft facing and one roll control thruster). The initial propellant load was 216.

There are two ancient Greek myths involving Constellation Hydra. One involved an enormous water snake with nine heads that was killed by Hercules with the help of the Goddess Athena.

Both Voyagers have plenty of hydrazine fuel -- Voyager 1 is expected to have enough propellant until 2040 and Voyager 2 until 2034. The limiting factor is the RTGs (radio-isotope thermal generators).

Then last year, two small moons, Nix and Hydra11, were unexpectedly found in Hubble images.

Earth rocks may contain water bound chemically ("water of hydration"), but not these. Water, of course, would be essential to any human outpost on the Moon.

While Hercules was busy fighting the multi-headed monster, Hydra, the goddess Hera, who did not like Hercules, sent the Crab to distract him.

Other names for this star are Alfard, Alphart, Kalbelaphard, or Cor Hydrae. The last of these names is Latin meaning "The Hydra's Heart." This was the designation of this star first introduced by the great sixteenth century astronomer Tycho Brahe.

"Hydraulics and electronics really fascinated me." Hydraulic systems are the secret behind car brakes, elevators and large machines such as bulldozers and cranes. These systems use a liquid to transfer force from one point to the other.

A wide, dense disk of gas and dust surrounds the newborn star TW Hydrae in this artist's concept. Material in the disk may be coalescing to form planets and smaller bodies.

Hg is the modern chemical symbol for mercury. It comes from hydrargyrum, a Latinized form of the Greek word "hydrargyros", which is a compound word meaning 'water' and 'silver' - since it is liquid, like water, and yet has a silvery metallic sheen.

The smallest is Crux (The Southern Cross) and the largest is Hydra (The Watersnake). The most common concept of a constellation is generally the pattern of stars (usually the brightest ones) that make up a familiar figure or pattern.

The constellation with the greatest number of visible stars in it is Centaurus (the Centaur - with 101 stars). The largest constellation is Hydra (The Water Snake) which extends over 3.158% of the sky.

It is located along the ecliptic between Leo and Libra. Virgo is seen along the . The brightest star in Virgo is Spica (meaning "ear of wheat"). Virgo is the second-largest constellation (of the 88 constellations), after Hydra.

Extremely dark in color, probably because of their hydrocarbon content, they show evidence of having adsorbed water of hydration. Thus, unlike the earth and the moon, they have never either melted or been reheated since they first formed.
