The study of the interaction that exists between a magnetic field and an electrically conducting fluid.

Hydromagnetic Wave A wave in which both the plasma and magnetic field oscillate.
Intensity Map A color-coded map of radiation intensity as a function of position. Different colors or shades represent different intensities of observed radiation.

1942: Alfvén suggests the existence of electromagnetic-hydromagnetic waves in a paper published in Nature.
1949: Laboratory experiments by S. Lundquist produce such waves in magnetized mercury, with a velocity that approximated Alfvén's formula.

The magnetic disturbances were originally interpreted as hydromagnetic waves, but it was soon realized that they were due to field-aligned or Birkeland currents.
