More on Icarus
Asteroid - planetoid, or minor planet, small body orbiting the sun.

1566 Icarus is an Apollo asteroid (a sub-class of near-Earth asteroid) whose unusual characteristic is that at perihelion it is closer to the Sun than Mercury; it is said to be a Mercury-crosser asteroid. It is also a Venus- and a Mars-crosser.

Icarus
Asteroid No. 1566, 1.1 km in diameter, discovered by Baade in 1948. It has the smallest orbit and highest eccentricity (a = 1.07 AU, e = 0.827, i = 23°, P = 408d) of any known minor planet.

1566 Icarus has one of the smallest orbits. At perihelion it is only 0.2 AU from the Sun (closer than Mercury) while at aphelion it is at almost 2 AU.

1566 Icarus has an orbit that carries it closer to the Sun than Mercury, the innermost planet in the solar system.

The ancient Greek myths of Daedalus and Icarus also reflect the universal desire to fly. As early as the 2d century ad the Greek satirist Lucian wrote about an imaginary voyage to the moon.

The research has been accepted for publication in the journal Icarus.

Our latest 116-page Astronomy Now special edition is an extravaganza of astronomy for the year ahead.

Judging from the story of Daedalus and Icarus, humans have been interested in aerodynamics and flying for thousands of years. But flying in a heavier-than-air machine has been possible only in the last hundred years, thanks to the Wright brothers.

A second legend identifies Boötes with Icarius (not to be confused with Icarus, son of Daedalus). According to this tale, recounted at length by Hyginus in Poetic Astronomy (II.4), the god Dionysus taught Icarius how to cultivate vines and make wine.

Of note, the asteroid Icarus, when closest to the sun, lies within Mercury's orbit - it comes close enough to the sun that Relativity must be taken into account in order to accurately predict its orbit.
