consisting of a hot white dwarf (or a hot blue sdBe subdwarf) and a much cooler and slightly more massive late-type main-sequence companion which fills its Roche lobe and is ejecting mass onto the white dwarf through its inner Lagrangian point.

This occurs through the inner Lagrangian point where the gravity of the two stars cancels, and is responsible for a number of astronomical phenomena including cataclysmic variables, Type Ia supernovae, and many X-ray binary systems.

Material then flows through the inner Lagrangian pointtowards the second star. Usually the material orbits the accreting star as an accretion disc before turbulence and viscosity cause it to fall to the star's surface.
