Definition: ionic (or ionized) gas: Gas whose atoms have lost or gained electrons, causing them to be electrically charged.

Hot, ionized medium

Charge exchange The loss of an electron by an atomic particle to an ionized atom. This can occur when neutral interstellar material leaks into the heliosphere and runs into ionized solar wind to create pick-up ions.

On other planets, such as Venus, gaseous water is cracked by solar ultraviolet, and the hydrogen is ionized and blown away by the solar wind. This effect is slow, but inexorable. It is believed that this is the reason why Venus has no water.
