We can find the latitude ( q ) and longitude ( f ) of a particular feature on Mars’ globe using simple trigonometry.

Latitude was measured in the past either at noon (the "noon sight") or from Polaris, the north star. Polaris always stays within 1 degree of celestial north pole.

Latitude can also be determined by the direction in which the stars travel over time. If the stars rise out of the east and travel straight up you are at the equator, but if they drift south you are to the north of the equator.

It has a known fixed position, at latitude 90° North. The boundaries of Canada extend all the way to the Geographic North Pole. There is no land at this location, which is usually covered by sea ice.

A second jet stream is located at the poleward limit of the equatorial tropical air above the transition zone between tropical and mid-latitude air. This subtropical jet stream is usually found at latitudes 30 to 40in general westerly flow.

The celestial equivalent of latitude is called declination and is measured in degrees North (positive numbers) or South (negative numbers) of the Celestial Equator. The celestial equivalent of longitude is called right ascension.

Declination is very much like latitude on the Earth. A Dec of 0 degreed points to the "Celestial Equator" just like a latitude of 0 is at the Equator.

Jupiter and the other gas planets have high velocity winds which are confined in wide bands of latitude. The winds blow in opposite directions in adjacent bands.

The radiant, which is only a few degrees from Procyon, is sufficiently high for observation by about an hour after local midnight at the latitude of New Zealand.

If you reside at 25 degrees north latitude or farther south, look below Jupiter to catch this southern signpost on or near your southern horizon.

In the ecliptic system, latitude is measured with respect to the ecliptic plane and position is measured by ecliptic latitude (elat) and ecliptic longitude (elon). Both ecliptic latitude and longitude are measured in degrees.
