The distance traveled in one year by light propagating in a vacuum,

A light-year is a unit of distance. It is the distance that light can travel in one year. Light moves at a velocity of about 300,000 kilometers (km) each second. So in one year, it can travel about 10 trillion km.

AU's and light-years are the two fundamental units of distance in astronomy and you should try to become comfortable with them.

About 550 light-years from Earth, a star like our Sun is writhing in its death throes. Chi Cygni has swollen in size to become a red giant star so large that it would swallow every planet out to Mars in our solar system.

HH 32, about 1,000 light-years from Earth, is an excellent example of a "Herbig-Haro object," which is formed when young stars eject jets of material back into interstellar space.

Suppose Alice is flying in a starship at half the speed of light to a star system ten light-years away. Alice's journey as seen by Bob on Earth would take 20 years.

Unfortunately, since M 13 is about 25,000 light-years away, we will have to wait about 50,000 years for a reply. Messages have been attached to the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft, but they will take thousands of years to reach the nearest stars.

Though appearing relatively dim compared to Sirius, Mirzam is by far the greater of the two, its mid-second magnitude (1.98) status the result of its 500-light-year distance, 60 times greater than Sirius's.

This is an image of MyCn18, a young planetary nebula located about 8,000 light-years away, taken with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) aboard NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (HST).

It is a red giant approximately 420 light-years distant from Earth. Its maximum magnitude can reach 2.0, making it one of the brightest stars in the sky, and then drop to 10.1 and make the star invisible to the naked eye.

Pulsars are found mainly in the disc of the Milky Way, within about 500 light-years of the plane of the Galaxy. A complete survey of the pulsars in the Galaxy is impossible as faint pulsars can only be detected if they are nearby.

The Antennae Galaxies (also known as NGC 4038 and 4039) are a pair of distorted colliding spiral galaxies about 70 million light-years away, in the constellation of Corvus (The Crow).

The brightest parts of this galaxy measure about 120,000 light-years in diameter, but its fainter extensions bring it out to a total of 170,000 light-years.

Glowing like a multi-facited jewel, the Spirograph nebula IC 418 lies about 2,000 light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Lepus. The planetary nebula represents the final stage in the evolution of a star similar to our Sun.

The closest cluster to us is the Virgo cluster, at a distance of about 50 Million Light-years. It spans 10 Million Light-years of space.

The core of Monoceros R2 is dense - no more than 2 light-years across - and packed with massive young stars, as well as a cluster of infrared sources such as newborn stars still surrounded by material and dusty discs.

Eta Carinae is a sixth- magnitude star located between 8,000 and 10,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina (the keel) which lies in the southern hemisphere. It was first cataloged in 1677 by astronomer extraordinaire Edmund Halley.

Our own galactic cluster, the Local Group, is about 5 million light-years across and contains about 30 galaxies (the largest of which are the Andromeda galaxy, Triangulum, and our Milky Way).
