Longitude prize
The longitude prize was a prize offered by the British government through an Act of Parliament in 1714 for the precise determination of a ship's longitude.

 


Longitude
The azimuthal position of a point on the surface of a or . The zero point of longitude is usually arbitrarily fixed at a given point (the on ), and longitude is then conventionally specified in the range 180° east to 180° west.

Longitude of the Ascending Node The angular distance, measured around the reference plane, between the FPA and the ascending node of an orbit.

LONGITUDE
Longitude is the angular distance east or west from the north-south line that passes through Greenwich, England, to a particular location. Greenwich, England, has a longitude of zero degrees.

Longitude can be measured in the same way. If one can accurately measure the angle to Polaris, a similar measurement to a star near the eastern or western horizons will provide the longitude.

The Longitude of Perihelion
The perihelion and aphelion are precessing, advancing eastward along the ecliptic about 11 arcseconds per year in relation to the fixed stars.

The longitude problem took centuries to solve. Two useful methods evolved during the 1700s, and are still practiced today: lunar distance, which does not involve the use of a chronometer, and use of an accurate timepiece, or chronometer.

Just as longitude and latitude allow us to locate a point on Earth's surface, right ascension and declination specify locations on the sky.
