Lupus is a constellation in the southern hemisphere. Its name means "wolf" in Latin. It was originally listed as a constellation by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century CE.

Lupus, the wolf:
An ancient, but faint constellation found in the southern skies. It has no bright stars and was sometimes combined with the constellation of Centaurus, the centaur.

who is holding it out towards Ara, the altar, as though about to

Norma, (originally Norma et Regula, the builder's level and set square) is an insignificant scattering of stars compared to Lupus and Centaurus.

Lupus (the wolf) is a constellation in the Southern Hemisphere. It is located between Centaurus to the west, Scorpius to the northeast. The open star cluster NGC 5822 is in Lupus.

In this enumeration Serpens is included in Serpentarius and Lupus in Centaurus; these two constellations were separated by Hipparchus and, later, by Ptolemy.

Notable Features: The group of faint stars we now call Ara was once considered part of the constellations Centaurus and Lupus; it became separated from them when the modern constellation Norma was interposed.
