M1

Astronomy LysitheaM10

The Crab Nebula, M1, was the first nebulous object observed by Charles Messier. It is a cloud of expanding gas left over from a supernova explosion. In the center of this nebula is a 16th magnitude star that is the collapsed core of the supernova.

M1 = NGC1952 ( 5h 34.5m +22°01´, 8.4 mag )
Crab Nebula is a remnant of a supernova which exploded in Taurus on July 4, 1054.

This cool and dim, main sequence red dwarf (M1.5 Vne) may have about 48.6 percent of Sol's mass (RECONS), 34 percent of its diameter, and 64/10,000th of its luminosity. The precise orbital elements of Groombridge 34 A and B may be uncertain.

It contained objects M1-M45. The first supplement included up through M68 and was published in the Connaissance des Temps for 1783 (published in 1780). M69 and M70 were added in a separate contribution to the end of the same volume.
