M107

M107 is close to the galactic plane at a distance of about 20,900 light years from Earth. There are 25 known variable stars in this cluster.

Mechain discovered this globular cluster in Ophiuchus in April 1782. It is located about 19,200 ly away.

M107 (NGC 6171) is the faintest of the bunch and quite small. This is one of those "Messiers" that were added to the original list, for some reason. It's three degrees SSW of zeta Ophiuchi.

In the constellation Ophiuchus lies a globular cluster of stars known as M107. It was discovered by Messier's colleague, Pierre Mechain, in 1782 and was not included in the original publication of the catalog.

Ophiuchus contains several star clusters, such as IC 4665, NGC 6633, M9, M10, M12, M14, M19, M62, and M107, as well as the nebula IC 4603-4604. The unusual galaxy merger remnant NGC 6240 is also in Ophiuchus.
