M11

Astronomy M109M110

Located in the constellation Scutum, M11 has been described as one of the richest and most compact open clusters. This cluster lies 6,000 light-years from Earth and has a diameter of about 21 light-years.

M11 = NGC6705 ( 18h 51.1m -6°16, 5.8 mag.´)
Wild Duck open star cluster in Scutum was discovered in 1681 by Kirch and Messier observed it on May 30, 1764. About 5,500 ly distant, it contains probably more than 870 stars.

M11, the Wild Duck Cluster is a very rich cluster located towards the centre of the Milky Way.

Some open clusters (such as M11 in Scutum, or the double cluster in Perseus) have about 1,000 stars in them.

It is located between 11 and 13 miles north east of Charing Cross in London, south of the M25 motorway and west of the M11 motorway and has boundaries with Chingford, Buckhurst Hill, Theydon Bois, Waltham Abbey, Essex, and Chigwell....

It contains no bright stars, and seems to have been carved out of adjoining Aquila and Serpens simply embrace a fine piece of the Milky Way. However, the open clusters M11 and M26 can be found here.

Detailed information about this cluster and M11 can be found in the Messier database.
The diffuse galactic nebula I 1287, lying about two degrees south of alpha Sct, requires at least an avarage telecopic power.
