M27 = NGC6853 ( 19h 59.6m +22°43´, 8.1 mag. )
Dumbbell Nebula was discovered by Messier on July 12, 1764. One of the finest planetary nebulae, it is located 815 ly away and measures 2.5 ly across.

M27 The Dumbell Nebula
Description: planetary nebula
Constellation: Vulpecula

Large Image ...

M27 is a planetary nebula some 1200 light years away from the Earth. Planetary nebulae are named because early astronomers saw them as round objects.

A planetary nebula, M27 actually represents the first such nebula discovered; it was first spied by Charles Messier in 1764.

M27 (NGC 6853, Dumbbell Nebula)
M31 (NGC 224, Andromeda Galaxy)
M32 (NGC 221, companion to M31)
M33 (NGC 598, Triangulum Galaxy)
M42 (NGC 1976, Orion Nebula)
M44 (NGC 2632, Praesepe)
M45 (Pleiades)
M50 (NGC 2323)
M51 (NGC 5194, Whirlpool Galaxy) ...

Next he showed me M27, the Dumbbell nebula, and a little later M42, the Orion nebula. Both were spectacular and also resembled long exposure photos with the exception of the missing colour.

Less than 18 degrees away from M27 lies the famous Ring Nebula in Lyra. Also known as M57 or NGC 6720, it is straight above the Dumbell, 41 degrees above the horizon. It is bright enough to find easily.

Commonly known as the Dumbbell Nebula, M27 was the first planetary nebula to be discovered. It is a shell of gas that was expelled from the nebula's central star. This object gets the name "dumbbell" from its hourglass, or dumbbell-like shape.

*M27, the Dumbbell Nebula, is a large, bright planetary nebula which was discovered by the French astronomer Charles Messier in 1764 as the very first object of its kind.

The first planetary nebula discovered was the Dumbbell Nebula in the constellation of Vulpecula, observed by Charles Messier in 1764 and listed as M27 in his catalogue of nebulous objects.

Deep Sky Objects:
M27 (NGC 6853), "The Dumbbell Nebula" is a noted planetary nebula, large, bright, and oddly shaped (thus its name). It glows with a faintly green colour.

When these objects were first discovered, their apparent disk-like structure and similarity to the outer planets of Uranus and Neptune led to their mistaken link with planets. The first PN discovered was Messier 27 (M27), the Dumbbell, ...
