Astronomy M50M52

Located in the constellation of Canes Venatici is an exquisite object known as M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy. This was one of Messier's original discoveries. He found it in 1773 while observing a comet.

M51 The Whirlpool Galaxy
Description: spiral galaxy
Constellation: Canes Venatici

Large Image ...

M51 (NGC 5194) or The Whirlpool Galaxy is the finest galaxy in Canes Venatici.
This spiral, found just southwest from the tip of the Big Dipper's handle, was the first spiral galaxy to be discovered (in 1845 by Lord Ross at his castle in Ireland).

M51 is currently involved in a close encounter with the companion galaxy NGC 5195 (just above the image).

For the amateur, M51 is easy and a showpiece if the sky is dark, but is quite sensitive for light pollution which easily makes it fade in the background.

The famous Whirlpool Nebula, M51, is probably the most notable object in this region of the sky. It is well worth an observation, but within the lightpollution of cities is may not been seen. Next to M51 lies the companion galaxy, NGC 5195.

Distinct structure was reported by William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse, whose 72-inch speculum-metal reflector showed clear spiral features in some bright nebulae such as M33, M51, and M101.

The magnificent spiral galaxy is M51, popularly known as the Whirlpool Galaxy, about 10 Mpc from Earth. Its smaller companion is an irregular galaxy that may have drifted past M51 millions of years ago.

I bought a 25 inch Dobsonion telescope just so I could see the spiral structure in M51, which is my favorite galaxy. I also love to strain to see 15th and 16th magnitude galaxies. I use their visibility as a test of sky transparency.

Five and three-quarters degrees away from M51 lies The Sunflower galaxy. This is also called M63, or NGC 5055. This is an elongated galaxy with a bright core. At magnitude 8.

Canes Venatici contains a globular cluster of stars, M3, and a beautiful spiral galaxy, M51, called the Whirlpool. M51 was the first galaxy in which spiral form was noticed, by the Irish astronomer Lord Rosse in 1845.

Hundreds of supernovae are discovered each year. However, they are not in our galaxy and usually very dim. Here is one in M51 in 1994.
