M58 = NGC4579 ( 12h 37.7m +11°49´, 9.8 mag. )
This barred spiral galaxy in Virgo cluster was discovered by Messier on April 15, 1779. It measures about 94,000 ly across on it is 55 million ly distant.

 


M58: bright compact barred spiral, but it takes a good night and at least a medium sized telescope to see the central bar.

The Virgo constellation is home to a small galaxy known as M58. This galaxy is classified as a barred spiral due to its elongated shape. It is one of four such objects in the Messier catalog.
